The Executive Director and Founder of the KIEK foundation, Barr. Mrs. Ebele Iyiegbu has stated that youth empowerment will go a long way in reducing the rate of unemployment and crime in our society.
Ebele noted this while giving a welcome address at the grand finale of the Rural Area Children and Teenagers in Information and Communication Technology (RACT-IN-ICT) programme which held in Abuja on Saturday, 21st August 2021.
She stated that the RACT-in-ICT programme was conceived in 2018 by the foundation with the aim of combating the rising rate of poverty, insecurity, and unemployment in Nigeria.
“We realised quite early that once young people are empowered with basic ICT skills, they will not only stay off crime because they now have a source of income which now enables them to fend for themselves, they will become employers of labour and in the long run contribute to building the nation’s economy,” she said.
The Executive Director who urged the graduands to stay focused not minding the challenges that they may encounter on their path to success later announced that the foundation will take up 5 of the most outstanding students on an internship for one year.
